3/27/2011 9:29:50 AM | This from Sarah Botfield on our Facebook page:Heard today that plans are afoot to build a 1000 hoouses on the airfield at Deenethorpe. Has anyone else heard this? Should we not form a protest group or something to stop this? I was born and raised in Deenethorpe and did not like the way the control tower was accidently knocked down in fog (according to sources that... day) several years ago. I feel very strongly about these future plans. I was at a lecture last night about the WWII remains and we were discussing the importance of these remains and what will become the future archaeology (I am a professional archaeologist). Eventually people will look at WWII defensive remains in the same way people today view Roman defensive sites (forts etc)
Save our heritage!

3/27/2011 1:01:43 PM | This is a difficult one. Firstly the information on the Tower is incorrect, the Tower was bulldozed by the estate because they got wind of plans to make it into a museum and they were not keen on having people wandering over the site 😞
We too have heard rumours of housing development. At the moment there are grand plans for the development of Corby and Weldon heading in the direction of the airfield 😞 However at this time, the airfield, as such, is not involved..............yet 😐
Now I going to get controversial and speculate on bits and bobs I've heard. For various reasons it is believed that the estate would like to rid itself of the airfield site at the earliest and most profitable convenience 😮 My personal and political opinion is that this is typical of the ungrateful and self serving English aristocracy who would seem to have no sense of the sacrifices made by the previous generation, housing serves no purpose but to house an ever increasing immigrant population who, to be honest, would not be here if the Nazis had won and the sacrifices of our fathers had not been made, ironic isn't it :shock:

3/28/2011 3:22:50 PM | The attitude of the Estate Office to the airfield does seem to blow hot and cold...
Back in 2006 they had the idea to expand the use of the flying side of the airfield, and open a museum on site. There was even talk of Classic Flight moving over from Bagington (Coventry) with their fleet.
However, when this was opposed by the Local Authority, they went in the completely opposite direction and within 2 years came up with this plan to obliterate the site and plonk an eco-village in the middle, plus a detached wind farm to power it.
As this is a public forum, I'll refrain from any further comment.
In light of that, and that the Historical Society have to maintain a working relationship with the Estate, at the present time I would ask that we stick to facts, not rumours.

The museum was a non starter....fact from more than one independant scource, housing is a creditable rumour......from more than one independant scource!! Working relationships are a two way street, well thats open to debate.

The current situation regarding "New Deenethorpe" appears to be that it's still just a proposal.
The agenda for the most recent Deene and Deenethorpe Parish Council meeting (1st March 2011) included this under the planning section:
108. PLANNING
a) Discussion surrounding the proposed development: “New Deenethorpe” on the disused airfield site.
(No formal planning application has been received, this is an opportunity to consider the various issues at an early stage.)
The next meeting should be at the start of May, which would be a good time to attend and see what the current state of the proposal is.
A couple of relevant sections from the East Northants Council Development Plan for the northern region.
The first section is specific to the airfield site:
20.0 Air Transport
20.1 With regard to local air transport Deenethorpe airfield has permission for passenger and freight handling on a small scale and a range of storage uses related to aviation. It is situated in the open countryside with a concentration of buildings and hangars and the access to the site is poor via narrow country lanes and small settlements.
Preferred Option
20.2 The preferred option for Deenethorpe airfield is to ensure that it remains a small scale operation for air transport and to strictly control any further expansion and uses permitted there. Any increase in activity is likely to lead to significant adverse effects on the local and wider areas.
Other Options Considered
20.3 Allow development to proceed in relation to air transport, and not prevent expansion. This was not considered appropriate due to the unsustainable nature of air transport, the visual impact of development of this nature in the open countryside and the wider environmental effects on the quality of life for local residents.
This next section refers to the planned housing development for the northern region:
40.0 Scale and Distribution of Development
40.5 The North Northamptonshire preferred approach is that the network of villages in East Northamptonshire should accommodate a maximum of 1460 houses over the next sixteen years. Some of this requirement has been met through housing completions or outstanding commitments (some outside the Plan area). Furthermore the preferred approach of this Plan is to allocate up to 150 houses at King’s Cliffe.
Therefore, a requirement remains to accommodate around 747 houses across the network of villages, up to 2021. This is largely expected to be absorbed in villages that function as smaller service centres, which could also include villages within East Northamptonshire that fall outside the scope of the Plan area.
40.6 The Plan will allocate sites at Nassington and Warmington, which are identified for development purposes.

The latest planning application related to the site as a whole was for a pig shed, which appears to be intended for the southern communal site, and was posted on the 28th March 2011.

3/31/2011 2:43:27 PM | Uummm maybe so Paul, but I put my big foot in my big mouth before on this forum and nearly screwed it up for the Society and rightly so was held accountable, so for the purposes of my freedom of speech and the fine name of the Society I will divorce myself from the Society so they can not be associated with my outspoken views.
I'll still cut the grass though

4/4/2011 7:34:33 AM | Hi - thanks for all the comments in relation to the post about the houses. I did know the story behind the demolition of the tower - I was repeating the story we had been fed by the builders as I thought it may provide a little light relief especially in view of what I had heard about the houses. At least we can be prepared when something does happen.
Can I also just say what a great site this is.
