OK, guys, just got a call from my Mom, and they got the headstone place on my Grandpa's grave, and it says (among other things of course) "Army", and that's it.

Now, this is an assumption on my part, but shouldn't it say Air Force instead? Again, I never asked my Grandpa which military he served in, as I ASSUMED it was teh Air Force because of what he did (obviously he was a Top Turret on the Mary Alice).

So, am I missing something? Or did tehy make a mistake? Or??????? I need to know quickly, as my Mom is wanting to get this fixed (if it is a problem) ASAP!!!

It's correct, US Army Air Corps the Air Force came later as a seperate service. I know my uncle's headstone had 401st BG, 613th BS on it but it's in a national cemetery.

Just to confirm what Don posted, the US Air Force didn't become independent from the US Army until 1947.

During WWII, AAF personnel were members of the United States Army Air Forces, which were part of the Army Air Corps, which was part of the US Army.

Hope that puts your mind at ease,
