Hans Shull 4/13/2004 7:26:33 AM | I was looking at some photos of 401st planes and noticed that I did not see the triangle S on the lower wing. I thought the group markings were on both sides of the fin and on the upper and lower surfaces of the wing. I am getting ready to do some of these markings on my model and want to be sure I get it right. Anyone remember if they were on the wings or not? Hans |
l.a.mitchell 4/13/2004 11:59:56 AM | hans, Our latest 401st Group History by Turner Publishers has a great pic on Inside front Cover of B-17 "Bad Penny". It shows Triangle "S" on top side of right wing. USAAFstar insignia on left side of wing. So..the insignias would be reversed on under neath side.WE all appreciate your endeavors with your model B-17. L.A. Mitchell |
Hans Shull 4/13/2004 12:27:04 PM | Thanks L.A. The photos of Heavy Date do not show the wings too well and I just want to get it right. The model is coming along and with the warmer weather I am spending more time out in the shop. I have started to fiberglass the wing and parts of the fuse and have even put some of the aluminum skin on. I think it is going to look pretty good when finished. I think this will be my last big project for awhile! I am at close to $7000.00 now and have a bit more to go. My Wife laughed when I had to replace the tires on my truck because all 4 tires mounted and balanced was $50.00 less than the main wheels for the B-17!!! Thanks again for the info. I'll add the markings. Hans |
Ed Login 5/3/2004 3:51:31 PM | Hans If I remember right,The triangle S was on the top right side of wing. Bottom right of wing was the USAAF star. The older B17s were painted blue on bottom. Top side was a Army brown color. Of course the newer B17s were not painted. Ed Login |
