8/18/2010 6:25:01 PM | I was lucky enough to pick up this pair of Benjamin RAF runway approach lights for a few pounds off a junk stall at RAF Bury St Edmunds last weekend. 😃 AMWD = Air Ministry Works Department LA = Light, (Runway) Approach 12 = 12" dia. lens P1 = not entirely sure, but most likely indicates a prefocus lamp. 1950s examples are marked H1 indicating a High Intensity Lamp. I've given them a quck clean overall with soapy water to show the yellow paint up properly, but they're off into the workshop this week for a bit of gentle TLC as almost every nut, bolt and fastener is rusted solid. These seem to be mid WWII - mid 1950s in date, so may have been the type installed at Deenethorpe as part of the standard MkII Drem lighting system. I'll have to compare them with the one that Graham has in the collection to make sure. Amazingly, what with this Euro-ban on proper lightbulbs, I was able to get a pair of brand-new 200 Watt bulbs for these within a day of arriving home. 😃 All the best, Paul

9/9/2010 6:31:10 AM | More airfield lighting in the collection: Type A3 Outer Circuit and Approach Funnel lights for the AFL MkII (Drem) lighting system, as fitted at Deenethorpe. With a bit of luck I should be able to get one good example by combining the parts from these two. All the best, Paul
