1/31/2010 4:29:50 PM | That’s How It Was When I was just a little boy my Mother said to me, “Come say a prayer to Jesus, get down on your knee.” She taught me how to talk to Him, He was her friend said she, And He became a friend of mine He’s been so good to me! Sue Ellie Rhyne, my teacher then, a lady in our church, Shaped my life and others too, she taught us how to search For all the finer things in life, no matter we were poor. We had the love of all our friends and Jesus loved us more! Pastor Shenk, who baptized me when I was six weeks old, Poured blessed water on my head, it went straight to my soul. I know that water came from God, He wanted it to stay. I still can feel it in my heart, I’m sure it’s there today! Pastor Shenk confirmed me too, by then I was twelve years old. I’d grown a bit and learned much more, I had a lofty goal. Pastor Sam arrived, a simple man, who had a heart of gold. He nurtured me and helped me plan a future that was bold! When war engulfed our nation I was the perfect age. Uncle Sam said “I want you,” I had to turn the page. No more my goal to preach the Word, I wanted now to fly. I was too young but Mother signed, I did not want to lie! I learned to fly a big, Boeing “B” seventeen. It was a fantastic, capable flying machine. It had four motors and a crew of ten. We all looked to God to “save our skin!” That we all survived was a gift straight from the Lord. It had always been our feeling that He was also on board. He saved me then, He watches o’er me today. I’ll always be so thankful, that Mother taught me to pray! Copyright 2009 Jacob Nathaniel Shepherd
