I just wanted to mention this computer game for any B17 enthusiast who has never heard of it.

It's an old game, as computers go, released in 2001, but, and this is why I mention it, it's an excellent educational tool for showing people just what exactly the combat crews experienced on their missions during WWII. I've used it, myself, to demonstrate to other members of my family, just what our father went through during WWII.

The creators of the game, Microprose, are notorious for overly detailed simulations, and this game is no exception. However, the detail here is welcome, for the above mentioned reasons.

So, for any who are interested: B-17 Flying Fortress: The Mighty 8th

I thought I'd bump this thread, for Derrick's (MaryAlice) sake. If you're interested in experiencing what your grandfather went through, this might something to try. Rick and I were talking about it earlier, and I went and found where one might obtain an "honest" copy. 🙂 Here's the link:

Enjoy!

Oh, Ed...also, what would I need to play this game? Is it a "Play Station" game? Or??? Again, you can laugh, I give you permission...I am NOT Computer Saavy...I am just now learning to post these little faces... 😂 to give you an idea.

And, as most have seen by now, not much of a typer either...I CAN assure you, I CAN spell...just not type, and yes,I know I type "the" wrong most times like this "teh" In fact, I do it so much, that most times I leave it, as takes to much time to go back and correct things like that. So, want everyone to know, I CAN spell, even though at times it may seem like I can't because of my typing. 😂

I am so excited, I am gonna post pics of it soon as I get it for you guys..and I will do a "build thread" so all you guys can make fun of me/critique my model building abilities (or lack of!!) Only been about 20 years since I have built a car model..granted i used to build quite a few car models...but has been awhile...hopefully it is like riding a bike....

Derrick,

The game in question runs on a plain ol' PC. It was written for XP, but my version runs fine on Windows 7.

PLEASE forgive the ignorance, but are you saying I can play it on my computer I am typing this with? Again, home computers are NOT my forte...I can show you how to rebuild a motor, a transmission, rear end, set up a nitrous system, repair sheetmetal, Stick, MIG, TIG weld anything, etc....but talk to me about home computers, and I am deer's eye's in headlights
I know that sounds crazy taht I could be that ignorant, especially cominf from someone that likes to build/repair/figure stuff out...I just never "got it", the lingo of computers. Sorry.

Yep, that's what I'm tellin' ya, Derrick. 🙂 If yer computer is not more than 10 years old, it should run on it.

And, no need to apologize for bein' computer ignorant. Many posters here are not as familiar with computers as much as they'd like to be. For that matter, I'm not as familiar with cars as I'd like either, but that never stopped me from working on my Fiero when it needed it. In fact, that's how you learn anything new, get out there and do it. 🙂

In fact, computers are a lot like a car, the only difference is that they have abstract parts rather than real ones, but if you can learn real concepts, you can learn abstract ones too.

Dos centavos.

LOL!! Too funny!! Cool, will i am gonna check that bad boy out and run it by my better half to make sure I can spend the money. Since I started researching all of this, I have spent money on a model plane (still have to buy materials) and teh registration fee. Not to mention, I gave the list of books you guys gave me to look into to my wife, so she knows I want to buy some books now as well. Sooooooo, gonna have to word the game purchase VERY carefully to her!! Hahaha!!

I am the "free spender" in our family, and wife keeps pretty good tabs on me because of that.

Oh, yes, my computer is less than 10 years old. We bought this one @ 4-5 years ago or so, and is a.......

Compaq Presario (had to look at front of it) with 2800 something, 512 something 120 something and CD-RW drive and DVD-ROM drive if any of tha tmakes sense to you. Either way, my computer is only @ 5 years old, so I am probaly OK.

Thanks again!

I KNEW something like that was coming 😂

Let's just say that, for the sake of argument, that by telling my wife I am buying it, keeps me out of doghouse since she writes the checks/balances checkbook. $10 or not 😛

Uh oh...it's either gone up, or you rounded "down"...but it's $13.19 plus shipping...might be out of my price range now.... 😂

I did some "creative" rounding... I'm a computer nerd, and we're known to be "precise" but I sometimes buck that trend. 😉
