The 401st flew two missions on D-Day. Does anyone know if the planes had the D-Day stripes on them? If so is there any pictures of one in the stripes?

Robert,
B-17s never had the invasion stripes on them.
Only the allied services deployed 4 engine bombers in any real number so there was not a real risk of friendly ground troops thinking they were enemy and firing on them.

Thanks for your information. I had never seen anything on it and was just curious.

There were no stripes painted on the fuselage of our B17's at D Day

Our crew flew Madame Queen IN-Q 613th B.SQ on the first D-day mission but none of the 4 engine aircraft had stripes-the twin engine bombers. fighters and transports had the  stripes. Quite a sight to see the invasion fleet during brief cloud breaks.
