Arthur R. Seder, Jr. 1/30/2004 5:26:42 PM | In light of the messages that have been posted with regard to adding aircraft names, correcting spelling, etc., I think a comment is in order from the viewpoint of those who are responsible for the 401st web site. First, Larry Cooper is still webmaster of the web site. He is responsible for having posted virtually all of the hundreds of items of information--missions flown, crew lists, airplane identification, Association news, photographs, etc., etc. In order to get an idea of the magnitude of his work, look at the site plan for the web site and check each of the items you see there. Second, neither Larry nor any other person receives any compensation for maintaining the web site. Everything that is done must be done in the spare time of individuals who have jobs and families and other responsibilities. Third, the information that appears on the web site is taken from the official records kept by the Group and the Squadrons, and we would be ill advised to begin to change that information on the basis of recollections of sixty years ago or surmises based on fragmentary evidence. That does not mean that additions and corrections cannot be made but that they must be fully verified before any changes are made. Fourth, while there appears to be considerable interest in tracking down the names given to some of the airplanes and the "art work" that appeared on planes and A-2 jackets, there are higher priorities as far as updating the web site is concerned. What we hope to do in the not too distant future is to add crew photographs for many more of the crews listed on the web site. We also hope to add more information about the missions, including maps showing the location of the targets. We will certainly try over a period of time to make additions and corrections to the aircraft list, but other material of a more substantive nature will necessarily be given a higher priority. COL Bruce E. Empric 1/31/2004 5:33:40 AM | Art, My intent was to provide information to the webmaster that may help fill gaps in his data base (as is requested at the bottom of the web page with the aircraft nicknames). It's clear that confirmation of information is required before adding/deleting/modifying existing Group records. As noted below, the Group Historian is appreciative. Thank you for explaining the workings behind the web update process and the time and effort involved therein. Keep up the good work. Regards, Bruce "Col Bruce E Empric, I am so glad that you have taken the time to post your message on our site. I am the groups Historian and always like to see this type of fact finding taking place. I want to add a note to your input. You have identified a plane called " Patches " as being part of the 614th sq. I think this is correct also as a member who flew on Patches with my Dad said the plane had two names, one was Patches which is what the crew called it by and the other name was Flak Rat II 42-97440 IW-A. This plane was shotdown in May 1944 C L Wilson Pilot. Thanks, Dale Anderson Group Historian hist401@alaska.com" |
Jacob Wall 1/31/2004 4:34:13 PM | Of course the intentions of Col, Empric are recognised and appreciated, as are the follow up comments from Mr Seder, the continuing developement of the 401st site is the aim of all who show such a great interest in the group, as we in England do and for a site to provoke and generate such interest is to be applauded. Dale A Anderson 2/2/2004 3:28:56 PM | Let me start by saying that I think Our web site is the best one that I have had the pleasure to work with. In fact Larry Coopers's web site demo at the last reunion was first rate and I for one can not thank him enough for his dedication and professionalism. I come from a technial background and I know how much time Larry has had to dedicate to our web site. As the groups historian I want our web site first of all to always be correct, because bad information is worse than no information. Col. Empric's posted messages has started a dialog within our forum and for that I am thankful. I hope that the sharing of ideas and information within our forum leads to postive results and future enhancements to our web site. I will as the groups historian take a look at Col. Empric's submissions and attempt to prepare a list of nicknames and associated serial numbers that I can verify for a future update to our web site. Thanks, Dale Anderson |
