William Huegan
S-Sgt. Chris Paisley
S-Sgt-Fred Cope
Mickey Mcoviack
Charles Ashery
1st Lt. Dan Knight

And, she also came across a newspaper clipping...April 1, Washington-William D. Sartor (my grandpa) wounded in action

Derrick Morris, Grandson of S/Sgt Engr/Top Turret William "Dale" Sartor, 615th BS 401st BG, "Mary Alice"
|- | '''MaryAlice'''

3/10/2010 1:52:20 PM | Also, just got confirmation, that one of teh pictures she has, you can NOT see thier faces..it is each one of them, with back to camera, posing with thier jackets on...and each jacket is different.

And once I have these pics in hand, will get it up for you guys.

Derrick Morris, Grandson of S/Sgt Engr/Top Turret William "Dale" Sartor, 615th BS 401st BG, "Mary Alice"
|- | '''MaryAlice'''

3/10/2010 2:26:01 PM | Also appears that my grandpa's Mom, my Great grandmother, received, and saved letters informing her that my Grandpa (her son obviously) was wounded in action. She also received and saved 2 other letters, and the last one saying that on Feb 28 he was being returned to action.
1st one was stating that they were sad to report he had been wounded
2nd one was stating that they WERE confirming he had in fact been wounded
3rd one stating he was put back into action.

1st was was signed by a "Frugal"
and 2nd and 3rd one's were signed by a Major General Javilo, or maybe J A Vilo? My mom was confusing me on the signature's on the letters.

Also, i asked my Mom when I could scan the photo's and letters, and she said next time she comes to Texas we could. My Mom has a home in Florida as well as here in Texas, and they are leaving for Florida tomorrow, but will be back for my son's Bday April 25th.

I MIGHT be able to get down there to my grandma's, and she might let me take them to get scanned, but kind of doubting that.

Also, on a funny side note...

I had sent my Mom a text message asking her if Grandpa had any bullet's in his chest. She said she would look for teh info when she got back to grandma's house. I was like, info? So, anyways, mom calls me and says I found some letters saying grandpa was wounded (which we knew already), but nothing about his "chest". She then asks me.."Did someone say he was wonded in teh chest or something? And I am like, HUH? She goes, "didn't you ask me if Grandpa had any bullet's in his chest?" I started laughing, and I was like, Mom, I MEANT, did Grandpa have any bullet's in his CHESS, where he kept all his War info, maybe he brought back some AMMO with him and kept all these years!!!! LOL!!!! So of course, she got a kick out of that, because she even asked Grandma, "Did Daddy get wounded in the chest?" So, of course Grandma was like, "no, not that I am aware of. I know he hurt his shoulder, but not his chest"

So, thought that was kind of funny.

Derrick Morris, Grandson of S/Sgt Engr/Top Turret William "Dale" Sartor, 615th BS 401st BG, "Mary Alice"
|- | '''MaryAlice'''

3/10/2010 2:31:04 PM | And, I JUST got a text message from my Mom, and she FOUND a bullet (I KNEW he had snuck at least one home) so she sent me a text saying she found it, and snuck it out of Grandma's house for me!!! YEAH MOM!!! LOL!!!

Derrick Morris, Grandson of S/Sgt Engr/Top Turret William "Dale" Sartor, 615th BS 401st BG, "Mary Alice"
|- | '''MaryAlice'''

3/15/2010 4:53:46 PM | OK guys, HERE WE GO!!!

First up, genuine, real deal, WWII, straight off the Mary Alice 50 cal bullet. Grandpa (assuming it was him) turned into a non-live round by emptying out the powder. BUt, here she is in all her glory...first time in over 60+ years this bullet has been anywhere but in my Grandpa's War Chess, and is now in my care for safe keeping, and once I am gone, will be given to my son for safe keeping. I took the pics next to a round of a .308 from my rifle that I shoot with (round is practice/breaking in rifle ammo, cheap stuff from Wal Mart) and next to a quarter for size comparisons:

Up next is my Grandpa's compass. Now, this I am not 100% sure if this was Army Air Force issued. We do know that Grandpa kept this in his War Chess, so maybe if not Army Air Force issued, he picked it up during teh War?? Or right after? maybe you guys (Paul, Don, Ed) can help me out and let us know?? So, here is the Compass...

OK, teh next photo, we don't have a name for teh crew member on teh left, but on teh right is my Grandpa, William D. Sartor. Maybe someone recognizes teh photo, and can help us out? We are ASSUMING it was/is a crew member of the Mary Alice, but no way of knowing at this point. Now, this is a "picture of a COPY of a picture". My Mom had this photo copied onto paper, and I took a picutre of the copy on the paper. So, i have included a couple shots in hopes of one of them coming out ok. Here it is:

Now, this last one I just took as it seems to be a little "clearer", but further away. Now, of course, the pic on teh far right, we have all seen before, if not, it is a pic that we BELIEVE to be my Grandpa (find my other thread on why), and is his jacket that he came home from the War in, and here it is:

Derrick Morris, Grandson of S/Sgt Engr/Top Turret William "Dale" Sartor, 615th BS 401st BG, "Mary Alice"
|- | '''MaryAlice'''

3/15/2010 5:03:41 PM | Oh, also, i did get confirmation jsut a few minutes ago on what happened to my Grandpa's flight jacket. @ 10+ years ago, he THREW IT AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, Grandma told my Mom that, according to my Grandpa, "it started to detoriate, so he threw it away". Now, not sure why my Grandpa would have done that, so i am thinking that my grandMA told him/made him throw it away. Just doesn't sound ike my Grandpa to up and throw something like that away, ESPECIALLY since he kept such detailed records of everything, and he KEPT EVERYTHING!! If you go out to his tool shed out back, it is FULL of stuff from I KNOW the 50's and 60's...so, not sure why, and again, does not sound like my Grandpa, but was told that in fact, he did chunk it.

I just sent anotehr text to my Mom to CONFIRM again, to maybe make sur Grandpa did not pack it away, and maybe hide it from my grandma????????? Would hate to think that it is gone, and really is still there, somewhere in the house???

AND, last but not least, as I said before, once my Mom gets back to Texas @ April 25th, I am gonna be able to get some more pictures to post up guys, so hang in there!!!!

Derrick Morris, Grandson of S/Sgt Engr/Top Turret William "Dale" Sartor, 615th BS 401st BG, "Mary Alice"
|- | '''Paul Bellamy'''

3/15/2010 6:21:37 PM | Thanks for the photos Derrick,

The .50 cal round is a factory-made inert round, hence the lack of a flash hole in the primer pocket and the drilled hole in the case.
FA = Frankford Arsenal, Philadelphia
4= 1944
The case is steel-washed for visual recognition.

Frankford produced a huge number of these, most dated 1944, for training and more importantly inspection and maintenance of guns.
Most gunners would have kept one of these handy to check headspacing, etc.

In fact, they made so many that they are still being released onto the surplus market in their original 10 round cartons.

All the best,
Paul

Paul Bellamy

|- | '''MaryAlice'''

3/15/2010 7:14:17 PM |
"Paul Bellamy":
Thanks for the photos Derrick,

The .50 cal round is a factory-made inert round, hence the lack of a flash hole in the primer pocket and the drilled hole in the case.
FA = Frankford Arsenal, Philadelphia
4= 1944

All the best,
Paul

Paul, man, you are a freakn encylopedia!! I have now moved onto "laughing" when you answer, because the wealth of info/knowledge you have/possess is truly astonishing, and I am amazed, to the point of it being "funny".

In other words, the bar has been set high in your case, and when I ask a question, I am now assuming you have/know the answer!!! LOL!!!!

Thanks Paul!

Derrick Morris, Grandson of S/Sgt Engr/Top Turret William "Dale" Sartor, 615th BS 401st BG, "Mary Alice"
|}
