My Mom just showed up as I hopped on to show her the pic from earlier, only to find this thread! Paul, again, how do i say it....THANKS!!!!!!!!

Derrick Morris, Grandson of S/Sgt Engr/Top Turret William "Dale" Sartor, 615th BS 401st BG, "Mary Alice"
|- | '''Phoenix'''

3/4/2010 1:14:16 PM | Paul,

Studying that crew photo background with great intensity, I got a feeling that could well be on the specticle down past the link trainer ‽ 23 -26, now if you got that aerial photo for me 😂 I could match up the nose pointing direction with the aircraft shown dispersed 😉 I have had the tip from a veteran source that 'Mary Alice' lived somewhere by the peri track bend at runway 28 😎

Tallyho

Dale

improvise, adapt, overcome
|- | '''Phoenix'''

3/4/2010 3:33:29 PM | Guys,

Win came up trumps and i've now got the big aerial shot 😃 done some hard staring and I'm opting for spot 23 as the home of 'Mary Alice' but these eyes are tired so I'm open to debate 🙂 at last we are getting somewhere 😎

Rest easy

Dale

improvise, adapt, overcome
|- | '''Paul Bellamy'''

3/4/2010 6:34:24 PM | Dale, I'd go with Dispersal 23 too.

The B-17s parked in the distance on the left of the photo would be on dispersals 19, 21 or 22, and the wood beside the bomb dump is visible to the right.

It's a great crew photo for showing the flight gear too.
Seven of them are wearing the (dark-shade) F-2 electrically-heated flying jacket and trousers, plus both types of AAF first-aid packets are visible attached to the chute harnesses. The one on the left is the early type with a zipper, the one on the right is the later one also issued to US paratroops and ground forces for D-Day.

All the best,
Paul

Paul Bellamy

|- | '''Phoenix'''

3/5/2010 12:51:33 PM | You'll do for me Paul, if you are in tandem then who can argue 🙂 Now to get myself over to the airfield locate the spot and do the photo thing 😉 Trouble is my daughter down in Somerset has my camera and my wife wants to go to the shops 😢

Oh well

Dale

improvise, adapt, overcome
|- | '''Paul Bellamy'''

3/5/2010 1:03:56 PM | The western side of dispersal 23 still remains at reduced width, and the outline of the rest of the grubbed-out dispersal can still be made out.
The self-set bushes either side if the concrete would prevent any meaningful then-and-now comparison from the exact spot, but perhaps a shot from the paddock over the top of the bushes showing the treeline would work better.

All the best,
Paul

Paul Bellamy

|- | '''MaryAlice'''

3/5/2010 3:22:21 PM | Hey guys...trying to make sense of what you guys are saying....are you refering to an "aerial" photo, and if so..where is that shot you are talking about? Or, are you talking about the crew shot from above?

Again, if talking about an aerial shot, could you point me in teh right direction so as to view it? As you guys know, I am begging for any help I can get, and if it pertains to teh Mary Alice/my Grandpa...then there is no shame in my game, and let the REAL begging begin! hahaha!

Derrick Morris, Grandson of S/Sgt Engr/Top Turret William "Dale" Sartor, 615th BS 401st BG, "Mary Alice"
|- | '''MaryAlice'''

3/5/2010 3:26:08 PM | Oh guys, also...my Mom was able to put her hands on another photograph. It is of my Grandpa, and what we THINK is a crew member (they are both in uniform, but no names). She made a copy of it for me, so I am going to "take a picture of a copy of a picture" and try and post it up later 😮

But, of course, once I am able to put my hands on the actual photo's my Grandpa has, I will get those scanned.

Also, maybe if I post up this picture...someone can maybe identify him?????

Derrick Morris, Grandson of S/Sgt Engr/Top Turret William "Dale" Sartor, 615th BS 401st BG, "Mary Alice"
|- | '''Phoenix'''

3/5/2010 3:28:56 PM | Derrick,

Both the shot of the crew, the aerial photo of the whole site and the book 'Airfields of the Eigth Then and Now' have been used during this investigation. Now if it is ok with Win I'll forward an e-mail of the aerial photo for you or I guess by the time I've finished this Paul will have put it on the forum 😉

Dale

PS. my mothers family maiden name is Morris 🙂 we must be distant cousins 😉

improvise, adapt, overcome
|- | '''MaryAlice'''

3/5/2010 3:35:54 PM |
"Phoenix":
Derrick,

Both the shot of the crew, the aerial photo of the whole site and the book 'Airfields of the Eigth Then and Now' have been used during this investigation. Thanks. yeah, Paul is pretty dang quick with the photo's!!

Also, I can't tell you if this helps any, but my Dad, who is an alcoholic, always told me as I was growing up, his Grandpa was from Germany. Now, reason I say my Dad is an alcoholic, maybe when he told me this he was drunk and wished that? Or maybe he actually was??? In other words, i can't confirm if what he said was true or not. And the reason i even say that at all...is because if it IS true, since you are located over in that "area", I guess you could say it would not be too far fetched to think we might actually be "distant cousins" LMAO!!!!!!! 😛

Derrick Morris, Grandson of S/Sgt Engr/Top Turret William "Dale" Sartor, 615th BS 401st BG, "Mary Alice"
|- | '''Paul Bellamy'''

3/5/2010 3:59:34 PM | Second attempt at posting these..... browser crashed first time around.

Dispersals 23-26, behind the 450th Sub-Depot workshops and Hangar 1. Paul, if I may...WHERE do you dig these pics up from? Or may I even dig a little further, and ask what it is that you do for a living? I am ASSUMING here, but either you are a history teacher with unlimited resources pertaining to WWII, OR, you are in the military/air force yourself, OR, you are a spy and have people sneak this stuff out for you! HAHAHA!! I think my first 2 assumptions might be more in line with reality though, LOL!!

Derrick Morris, Grandson of S/Sgt Engr/Top Turret William "Dale" Sartor, 615th BS 401st BG, "Mary Alice"
|}
