I've been looking for a hi-res copy of this particular photo for a while, and finally found it on Footnote (70148AC):

All the best,

Hi Paul:
Great find - and interesting (curious) photo to boot.
- - From its ID number, although a very high one, I assume it's in the U.S. National Archives' Still Picture Collection;
- - It's a curious proportion - most are 4x5, and this one's almost square,
and
- - Pictured with her WWII sister 'workhorses', a C-47 and B-24, I'd love to know the date/place/caption for it.
Any clues?
Win

I'm not so sure it's a "square" photo, Win. Looks like a display issue... Looks like I should investigate.

Good find, Paul. Now if you could only find a photo of the Hard Seventeen, then you'd be my hero. ❗ (Muahahahahha!!!)

Hi Win,

It's from the Air Force Historical Research Agency's duplicate WWII US Air Force Photographs Collection held at NARA, as are all the ones freely available via Footnote.com.
The unusual number on this photo is likely due to it being in the "Theaters - Russia" section rather than the "Theaters - Europe - England" that the majority of the 401st photos are filed in.

The original caption on the back reads:

A Boeing B-17 "Flying Fortress", a Consolidated B-24 "Liberator" and a Douglas C-47 are parked at Poltava Airbase, one of the shuttle mission bases in Russia. 11 April 1945.

Something I have noticed about the NARA collection on Footnote is that the photograph on the index card is a slightly cropped version of those supplied directly by NARA, such as those that were/are in the NARA Gallery pages of the 401st Website.

Ed,

I'm still chugging through the miscellaneous and uncaptioned photos, IF there's a new photo of Hard Seventeen out there I'll find it one day. As it is, I only have the hi-res copy of the nose art + crew photo.

All the best,
Paul

PS, the first photo, and the one above, are 800x600ish and 800x650ish respectively, so if they are coming out square there's something not right. 😉

Damn, Paul! 🙂 Where was that photo (the high res one) when I was working on my scale model of the H17? It looks like my original guess was correct: the BJ hand WAS a Jack and a Seven. The original photo you gave me the 7 was so hard to read that I assumed it was a Jack and an Ace. Looks like I gotta go back to the drawing board! 😉

BTW, I was kidding about a photo of the H17: I was just doing my usual schtick about the H17 being the only 401st plane that mattered.

(So many prejudices, so little time.) 😃

Ed.

Paul & Ed:

Answers: Wow! ...and then sone - thanks.
Square photo / not: Maybe it's my glasses...or what's behind them...or worse...
Hunting: 44-31081 'IN-C (Son of A Blitz) - definitely (my) most valuable 613Sq A/C. (What we don't understand is how could an original 401st B-17 escape a camera for almost a year....Deenethorpe's not THAT big....).

Ditto Ed: Another great 'find', Paul...and all the good info that goes with it.

Paul,

You seem to be finding all this research far too easy 😶 so time for a challenge  see if you can locate the dispersal used for the 'Mary Alice' so I can go photograph it 😂

ps:- see you Friday
