Good morning,
I'm searching information about Peter Piazza and/or his relatives, because probably my Grand Father, an italian soldier, gave him his blood when he was shot down 20 february 1944 (Doolittle's Doughboy's)...Is it possible?
Thank you

http://www.401bg.com/history/crew.asp?cid=13051

The above link will show you the crew that Sgt Piazza was with. also he was in the 615th Squadron of the 401st Bomb Group. I checked the following 401st Bombgroup Directories 1989, 2000 & 2005 and didn't not find him listed he was from Indiana.

Don Byers

Sgt. Donald C. Byers, 613th Bomb Squadron, Togglier, 42-97344 Carrie B II, KIA 08/24/1944.

I found only one Peter Piazza in the NARA WWII POW records:

SERIAL NUMBER: 35583120
NAME: PIAZZA PETER J
GRADE: Staff Sergeant
SERVICE CODE: Army
ARM OR SERVICE: Air Corps
DATE REPORT: 20th February 1944
STATE OF RESIDENCE: Indiana
TYPE OF ORGANIZATION: Bombardment, Heavy
PARENT UNIT NUMBER: 401
PARENT UNIT TYPE: Group
AREA: European Theatre
LATEST REPORT DATE: 4th July 1945
SOURCE OF REPORT: Individual has been reported through sources considered official.
STATUS: Returned to Military Control, Liberated or Repatriated
DETAINING POWER: Germany
CAMP: Stalag Luft 4 Gross-Tychow (formerly Heydekrug) Pomerania, Prussia (moved to Wobbelin Bei Ludwigslust) (To Usedom Bei Savenmunde) 54-16

This gives us confirmation of name, rank, unit and date, and the serial number can be used to find his enlistment record, which gives his home county as Lake, IN and enlistment date as 21st January 1943.

Hope that gives you something to work with.

All the best,
Paul

Thanks Don and Paul.
I'm very glad to see that this forum is active!
I've already see your information, but there is a new one that could help me. Lake IN.
I don't know that it was possible to go back at Lake County.
I hope this is only the first step...
I've find other information that could be confirm the meeting beetween Peter and Pellegrino (my grandfather's first name) in the site http://www.remember-our-heroes.nl that i think you already know 🙂.
In fact the report of the mission says that the "Doolittle's Doughboy's" was shot down near Magdeburg.
My grandfather was here! He stayed for about 2 weeks at Lazaret. In one that days, germans take Peter there because he was wounded...

I hope to obtain some contacts with him or his family.
Thanks again guys! 🙂

Yes we are aware of the other site and I had not had time to check that site for the MACR info so am glad you found it.

I find that his fathers name was Leanord and Mother was Rosa. He had an older brother Philip and Sister Rosarie and he was the youngest at age 6 in the 1930 census. He died 10 Nov 1971 In Los Angeles California. I have not yet been able to find his marriage/wife's name or if he had any children.

Alessio:

1. Now that you know when and where Peter Piazza died, you may be able to locate relatives by finding his obituary in a Los Angeles newspaper.
2. A library may be able to help you find it.
3. And depending on the newspaper, their obituaries may be 'searchable' on the Internet.

Good luck.

I've got my contacts in LA on the case now.
They are going to have a look at the back issues of the various LA and local newspapers for the period to see if anything turns up and report back.

Mr Piazza's Record of Death may be available via http://www.lavote.net/RECORDER/BDM_Records.cfm which could include a next-of-kin.

I did notice that there are still at least one Piazza family in the Lake County area. Maybe a letter to the local newspaper would get a response.

All the best,
Paul

Ah, obviously if you can, I'd like have photos of Peter (the one posted in crew section is not clear...) and "Doolittle's Doughboy's" B17!

In particular for Andy (I think other guys already knows): Searching the web I find a book with the story of the last mission of the "Doolittle Doughboy's" write by co-pilot Carter. The book is "The lucky Ones" stories of various crews...
